ASEAN established a free trade area agreement that is in the presence of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA). While the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area is a free-trade cooperation between ASEAN member countries with China on tariffs, import duties, and taxes. Both AFTA and ACFTA will certainly have an impact on the domestic market. Some industries are very great to feel the effects from the attacks of products from other countries but the most visible impact of that is the garment industry. Garment industry isproducing products that are most needed by the people of Indonesia, so the demand forgarments will increase. It is difficult denying that the importer would be tempted by all the potential demand of garment products in the homeland so much that trying to flood itwith imported products, both legal and illegal. One way to protect domestic marketsfrom storm attack illegal garment products is through non-tariff regulation of Permendag No.56/2008.
The number of imported garment products illegally since 2003 have increased and decreased significantly. Entering the year 2009 where Permendag No.56/2008 was enacted did not provide a significant impact. It is seen that the product is still low compared to the illegal legal status reached 350,000, an increase of 32% from a year earlier. This means that implementation of Permendag No.56/2008 has constraints that inhibit the regulation goal as a drag attack illegal imports and creating a conducivebusiness competition, in other words is still not effective for domestic protection for AFTA and ACFTA.

Mastering “the Art of Getting Things Done Through People”

By Promark Jurnal, March 22, 2010 5:13 pm

Mary Parker Follet, an influential early-20th-century social commentator and writer, considered management to be “the art of getting things done through people.” While much of her work focused on education and communities, her analyses also included ways in which companies could be more productive. She essentially
believed in the power of people working together while respecting the contributions of the individual — a philosophy that’s helped thousands of organizations succeed.

Mary Follet knew that to get things done, you needed to form a community. Without the community, the work would remain static. Broadening her teachings to the state of management and administration in industry and public institutions, Follet became known as a management expert, a woman “before her time.” Today, companies still look to her teachings to optimize productivity.

Here are some Follet-inspired management tips that will help you get things done through your people:

Opt for “power with” vs. “power over.”
Follet believed that people preferred to take “power over” because it offered a quick solution. She distinguished between operating in a coercive manner (power over) versus operating in a coactive manner (power with). The latter is about developing power within people. Consider ways you can give your people power — over their work, their decisions, even their consequences.

Management: The Art of Getting Things Done Through People

By Promark Jurnal, March 22, 2010 5:07 pm

What exactly is meant by ‘management’? Unfortunately, management is a concept that has not been defined accurately as yet, and it is even today difficult to understand perfectly the general terms that are used in conjunction with management. However, it must be stated that management is nothing but the art of getting things done through other people. This was a definition that was offered by the President of the American Management Association in 1980. However, today, management is being defined as working ‘with’ and ‘through’ people so that the primary objectives of the organization and all its members can be fulfilled. There are certain important differences between the two definitions, and they are that, for one, today, there is more importance on the human being in the firm, and the focus has shifted to the results that need to be accomplished rather than on things and objects, and thirdly, today’s’ management means that the achievement of the members’ personal objectives can be and must be integrated closely with the organizations’ objectives. (Montana; Charnov, 1)

However, the traits that inevitably mark a ‘good manager’ are many and varied, but there are certain traits that seem to be recognized and accepted universally. These are that, for one, a good manager must be an effective and an efficient communicator, he must be able to delegate responsibilities, he must be able to encourage employee participation, and also encourage them to ask questions. A good manager must also possess the innate ability and capability of encouraging and leading the staff of his organization, and to inspire them through his actions and words. However, a good manager must also realize that all theses things may not occur naturally; they must be learned and acquired over a period of time. When taken on an individual level, this would mean that the manager would have to learn through experience, training, and then development, and for an organization, this would mean putting money and commitment into the betterment of these areas, and also that there must be a good and effective management development strategy in place. (What makes a good manager?)

8 Rules for getting things done through people – On the Management Side

By Promark Jurnal, March 22, 2010 5:04 pm

A manager’s job is to get things done by other people. That’s axiomatic. But how, precisely, is that accomplished? Here are eight practical rules that will help any manager get more accomplished by his people and, in the process, build an alert, eager, responsible staff.

Be considerate. Nothing contributes more to building a strong, hard-working, loyal team than a considerate chief. He is courteous to his people. He puts himself in their place before making any decisions affecting them. He knows that they have pride and self-respect, and that he will get much more effective work by treating those characteristics as assets than by trampling on them.

Delegate responsibility for details to subordinates. This is the essence of management. You are not a manager if you do not delegate, just as you are not a machinist if you cannot run a machine. The manager who insists on keeping his hand on the details discourages his people by competing with them. The capable ones will quit, the others will sit back and let him do the work. And he will have no time for his real job–thinking and planning.

Give credit where it is due. Taking credit that really belongs to others destroys their initiative and willingness to assume responsibility. Giving proper recognition confers a double benefit: they get credit for doing the job; you get credit for building an able staff.
